Hi friends! Welcome to *It Really Happened!* I’m your host, Bill Whitaker, and today’s true adventure is *The Man Who Stopped a Waterfall*! Get ready—this one’s going to take us right to the edge of something HUGE. And then… it just stops.

Okay, quick question: Have you ever seen a picture of Niagara Falls? Or maybe even visited?! It’s MASSIVE. A thundering, roaring wall of water—millions of gallons rushing over the edge every minute! It’s so loud you can barely hear yourself talk when you’re near it. But, believe it or not, there was a day when the waterfall just… stopped. Completely.

Can you picture that? A giant, roaring waterfall turning silent. Just like that. No water. No noise. Nothing but the rocks underneath.

And it REALLY happened. In 1969.

Now, let’s rewind a little bit. Niagara Falls is actually made up of three waterfalls: the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls. These waterfalls have been around for thousands of years, carved out by nature, and they're pretty much unstoppable. At least, that's what people thought.

But by the late 1960s, scientists had a problem. The American Falls—one of those three big waterfalls—was starting to look different. Huge chunks of rock had broken off the edge over the years. And people were worried. What if the rocks kept breaking? Could the whole thing just… collapse?!

So, a group of engineers and scientists came up with a wild idea. They decided to stop the waterfall. Yep, stop it! They thought, if they could redirect the water for a little while, they could get a good look at the rocks underneath and figure out how to protect the Falls from falling apart.

Crazy, right?! And here’s how they did it.

First, they built a giant dam upstream—basically a wall made out of 27,000 tons of rocks and dirt. Imagine a bunch of construction trucks bringing entire mountains of dirt and rocks, dumping them into the river, blocking the flow of water like a giant plug in a sink. Slowly but surely, the water above the Falls started to build up. And then… the water rushing over the edge of the American Falls slowed down. And slowed down … and slowed down… until, finally, there was no water at all.

Can you picture it? A dry waterfall. The roaring sound of rushing water replaced by silence. People standing at the edge, staring down at the cliffs and the rocks they'd never seen before. It must have been so WEIRD. A giant waterfall… frozen in time.

And what they discovered under the Falls was just as exciting. There were centuries of secrets hiding there! Scientists found ancient coins, lost cameras, and even some completely fossilized tree trunks that had been hidden by the rushing water.

Oh! And get this—did you know that when water rushes over a cliff for thousands of years, it smooths everything out? But when the Falls were dry, people saw something strange. The rocks underneath weren’t smooth at all. They were jagged and sharp, like broken teeth! That meant those rocks had been breaking off WAY faster than anyone thought.

Okay, but here’s my favorite part. While the waterfall was stopped, they let tourists come check it out. Tons of people came to see the “dry Falls,” and some even climbed down to walk where the water used to crash! Imagine standing there, knowing that usually, millions of gallons of water would be thundering over the spot where YOU were standing. How cool—and a little scary—would that be?!

But don’t worry. After a few months of studying and testing, they decided to let the water return. Engineers carefully removed the dam they'd built, and the water rushed back. People cheered as the American Falls roared back to life!

So, why does this really matter? Well, it showed how humans and nature can work together. Scientists learned SO much about how waterfalls work and how to save them from crumbling. And thanks to all that research, Niagara Falls is still standing strong today—and now millions of people from all over the world visit to see its thundering beauty.

And that… really happened! Now the missing piece is filled in. Thanks for listening! Tell a friend something surprising that happened to you—and maybe even challenge them to imagine something as big as a waterfall just… stopping. See you next time on *It Really Happened*!
